In Memory of Rich Goulet

Posted on: March 29, 2021

It is with deepest regret we announce the passing of local coaching legend Rich Goulet on March 28, 2021. Coach Goulet dedicated nearly 50 years to organizing and coaching basketball in our local community. During his storied coaching career, Coach Goulet coached at every level from Little Dribbler leagues in the Steve Nash Youth Basketball Association league he established in Pitt Meadows to Provincial teams that took part in National Championships and the Canada Games.

As a high school coach at St. Thomas More, Pitt Meadows and Heritage Woods Secondary Schools, Rich amassed over 1000 wins and 4 provincial Championships at the Senior Boys level. Coach Goulet established the Grade 8 Boys and Girls Provincial Basketball Championships to provide a focal point for young high school basketball players where one had not previously existed. He and his group of local volunteer parents worked tirelessly to ensure that everyone involved had a real provincial experience.

Coach Goulet was truly dedicated to the game of basketball. It was not unusual for him to coach teams at the Grade 8, Junior and Senior levels all on the same day at his high school but what he was even more dedicated to was the development of life skills in the young people he coached, instilling a sense of commitment, work ethic and teamwork.

In his spare time, Coach Goulet served as a Board Member and Elite Committee Chair for Basketball BC. He helped establish Basketball B.C.’s framework for its Elite, Provincial and High Performance programs for over three decades. During that time, he had the opportunity to coach thousands of athletes including former and current NBA players Steve Nash, Robert Sacre and Kelly Olynyk and mentor hundreds of coaches that learned from his guidance.

For his dedication and contributions to the game of basketball, Coach Goulet was inducted into the Basketball BC Hall of Fame and received the Prime Minister's Volunteer Award in 2012.

We in the basketball community mourn Coach Goulet’s passing and honour his great contribution to the players, coaches, and game for which we share a great passion.
