The U16/17/18 Girls Basketball Development Program is designed exclusively to improve individual basketball skills and applied team concepts—period. This is not a drop-in, run-and-gun environment of endless, unstructured games. Every session is intentional, coached, corrected, and built to elevate on-court performance within a structured team setting.

Purpose

This program exists to prepare Grade 10–12 athletes for their upcoming basketball season by systematically strengthening the skills, habits, and basketball IQ required to compete at a higher level. The focus is simple and direct: become a better basketball player within the framework of a team.

What Makes This Program Different

·         No endless, unmanaged scrimmaging

·         No “roll the ball out” sessions

·         No participation without correction

·         Instead, players receive:

·         Structured skill progressions

·         Tactical teaching and situational play

·         Real-time coaching feedback

·         Adjustments and accountability

·         Game-speed application of concepts

·         Every drill, rep, and competitive segment has a purpose.

Core Areas of Development

The program addresses all essential components required to develop as a complete basketball player:

1. Offensive Skill Development

·         Ball handling under pressure

·         Finishing at the rim through contact

·         Shooting mechanics, shot preparation, and game-speed repetition

·         Footwork (triple threat, pivots, stops, change of direction)

·         Decision-making in pick-and-roll and advantage situations

·         Off-ball movement, spacing, and timing

2. Defensive Skill Development

·         On-ball containment and stance discipline

·         Closeouts and shot contest technique

·         Help-side positioning and rotations

·         Communication and defensive awareness

·         Rebounding fundamentals and physicality

3. Basketball IQ & Team Concepts

·         Offensive spacing principles

·         Reading defensive coverage

·         Understanding roles within team structure

·         Transition offense and defense

·         Situational execution (late-game, special scenarios)

·         Making adjustments during play

4. Competitive Application

Structured scrimmage segments are used to apply teaching points. Play is stopped for correction. Adjustments are implemented. Feedback is immediate. Players are challenged to execute concepts—not just play.

Who It’s For

This program is built for Grade 10–12 athletes (U16/U17/U18) who are preparing for their next school or club basketball season and are serious about improving their performance. It is ideal for players who want:

·         Skill refinement

·         Better understanding of team systems

·         Increased confidence in structured play

·         A competitive environment with accountability

The Tri-City Youth Basketball Association (TCYBA) was formed in 1999 and is a volunteer-driven registered not-for-profit that serves the youth of Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, Port Moody (Tri-Cities), New Westminster, Burnaby and surrounding areas in British Columbia, Canada. Currently, we have well over 2000 players, from Kindergarten to grade 12, playing in various divisions including both competitive Elite programs and recreational play. We offer academies, camps, official's development paths and coaching clinics in partnership with various local, provincial and national partners. Open to both boys and girls, the club operates out-of-school gyms across the Tri-City area and strives to ensure all youth that want to enjoy the sport have an opportunity to participate. We believe that youth sport is critical to a child's development and the opportunity to build skills for both the sport and for life should be available to all of our community's youth.
