COACHES GUIDE

The TCYBA Coaching Guide was specifically developed for Tri-City Youth Basketball Association coaches based on Basketball Canada’s Athlete Development Model. This resource document gives guidance on the age appropriateness for teaching various individual and team skills. As well, the guide gives suggestions on the sequence in which to teach the various skills. The guide is intended to be read in conjunction with the TCYBA Coaching Manual and Practice Plans available to all TCYBA coaches.

Rules & Policies

As a TCYBA coach, it is important to become familiar with the codes of conduct, other assorted rules, and TCYBA policies. These are available on our Rules & Policies page.

Coaches Education

The TCYBA encourages all coaches to receive as much coaching training as they can. To this end, the TCYBA will regularly conduct coaching clinics that can be attended by any current coaches in the league at no cost to them, including the Pre-Level 1 clinic.

Coaches wishing to attend NCCP clinics not hosted by the TCYBA will be reimbursed for 50% of the cost of the instructional part of the course upon completion of the course and submission of the receipt to the League Coordinator. The other 50% of the instructional part of the course will be reimbursed after the coach starts coaching a team during the following basketball season.

Coaches planning to apply for funding must confirm their intentions with the Coaching Director prior to registering for the course to ensure that the course is recognized by the League and to confirm the portion of the course’s cost that will be covered by the League.

Coaching Workshops

TCYBA has developed a series of complimentary, hands-on coaching workshops for all TCYBA coaches and assistant coaches to attend: Coaching 101, Coaching 201 and Coaching 301. All workshops are delivered by Anthony Luyken, Head Coach of the Canada Basketball / Basketball BC Centre for Performance.

While we recommend you take these workshops in order, you can take any workshop when it's offered. You can also take each workshop multiple times. Pre-registration is required and registration information will be communicated as courses become available.

Coaching 101

Before the start of the season, TCYBA offers a Coaching 101 session to instruct and teach the basic fundamental building blocks of basketball, shooting, ball handling, and passing. In addition, Coaches receive instruction on:

  • How to structure a practice

  • Game centred drills

  • How to compete throughout your practice

  • Mandatory areas for athletic and skill development

  • How to load drills through progressions

  • Style of play consideration

  • Safety protocols

  • Coaching resources

A coach’s Question and Answer period follows the presentation.
